The presidential hopeful of the United National Front, Minister Sajith Premadasa says he would contest in the upcoming election under the ‘Swan’ symbol.
The Minister stated this speaking at the press conference held yesterday following the Working Committee meeting of the United National Party.
He appealed to everyone to support him on the national movement to build a “new Sri Lanka”.
Responding to questions on the abolishment of the Executive Presidency, the UNF presidential aspirant said they would go ahead with the programme that was implemented in this regard.
Presidential candidate of the UNP Minister Sajith Premadasa requests everyone to extend their support to huge task to build a new Sri Lanka. The minister also said that a massive work plan is in front to take the country into a new direction through development and industrial revolution. The minister made these remarks while addressing the media conference at Sirikotha yesterday. The media conference was organized after Minister Sajith Premamdasa was named as the “Presidential Candidate” of UNP. Addressing the gathering, the minister further said that his vision is to establish reconciliation, peace and co-existence in an undivided country. The restructuring process commenced in 2015 will be continued with the support of different factions of the society. The minister expects to continue with the on-going discussions of power sharing , electrorate restructure and presidency system. A grand alliance will be created with the support of all recognized parties including UNP and other recognized political parties.
Joining the media conference Minister Akila Viraj Kariyawasam said Minister Sajith Premadasa is nominated as the presidential candidate by the UNP Working Committee and the Parliamentary Group. Meanwhile, Prime Minister Ranil Wickremasinghe will serve as the leader of the party and the Prime Minister in future. If elected, the future President and the Prime Minister are expected to work with a mutual understanding. The presidential election campaign will be carried out as a joint venture with the support of party leader General Secretary and senior members of the party. Minister Kariyawasam also said that they expect to contest the forthcoming presidential election in a grand alliance. Many political parties pledged their support in this regard. Addressing the gathering Minister Kabir Hasheem said the UNP today showed an example on how the democracy is practiced in the main headquarters.
Therefore, it can be assumed that the real democracy started from the own den itself. UNP has set an example to the country by nominating the candidate to the highest post whom the general public wanted. The members of UNP have mutually agreed to nominate a leader whom the country needs at this juncture. Therefore, this could be termed as the first victory of the long journey. Minister Kabir Hasheem also said the members of UNP expressed their views in a transparent manner without hiding anything.
