The railway strike continues despite efforts taken to solve the grievances of strikers. The Department of Railways says, retired train drivers will be deployed to operate the stalled railway services.

This measure is being taken due to the on-going strike action launched by the railway trade unions.
Despite the fifth consecutive day of the strike, eleven trains reportedly commuted this morning.

As the discussions held with railway trade unions ended without a consensus this evening, railway trade union representatives say, the on-going strike will continue today as well.

Meanwhile, Minister Dr. Rajitha Senarathne says, the Cabinet of Ministers has decided to raise awareness among the public, on the totally unjustifiable strike action that the railway trade unions have resorted to.
