The Election Commission requests all public servants to refrain from engaging in continuous strikes during the presidential election period. Chairman of the Commission, Mahinda Deshapriya says in a statement that some of the strikes that were launched before the nominations were called, have now ended. However, certain railway trade unions continue to strike while employees in several other essential state sectors including the postal service are planning work stoppages. The Election Commission Chairman stresses that an election could be held successfully only with the fullest support of public servants. He calls for the resolution of issues through negotiation and to refrain from striking during this election period.
