Nominations for the upcoming presidential election will be accepted from 9.00 am to 11.00 am today. Additional Commissioner of the Election Commission Rasika Pieris says objections could be raised within the next half hour. Thereafter, the accepted and rejected nominations will be announced. A candidate can be accompanied by two other persons only when handing over the nominations. More than 500 police personnel will help beef up security at and near the Elections Secretariat from 6.00 am today.
The Additional Elections Commissioner also says the highest ever number of cash deposits was placed for this election. It was by a total of 41 candidates from 19 recognized political parties, three other parties and 19 independent candidates.
