Participating as the chief guest at the National Pensioner’s Day ceremony held at Nelum Pokuna today, Prime Minister Ranil Wickremasinghe pointed out the need to increase the economic growth of the country to 7.5 per cent, in order to upgrade the current pension scheme.
The Premier notes, for such a targeted economic growth to be achieved, it is needed to create an export oriented economy, and steps will be taken to allocate 500 billion rupees to obtain the support of the private sector in this process.
The dividends that result from such an investment can be benefited by the pensioners, as well.
Joining in the event, Minister Ranjith Maddumabandara said, the present government has created an environment in which pensioners can live with respect. He noted, anomalies in the payment of pensions were rectified by the government, after a struggle of 9 years. He added, a pension of 44 per cent was granted for retired government servants who have served for 30 years.
