Presidential candidate Sajith Premadasa says women should be empowered to achieve the maximum capacity of development in the country. He said that the strength given by women for the development of a community in a country is very high. Mr. Sajith Premadasa said this while attending a function today at the Sugathadasa Indoor stadium in Colombo to launch the women’s charter. Speaking on the occasion Mr. Sajith Premadasa pointed out that Sri Lanka’s health, education and many other sectors have reached successful targets. Harassment of women is at a low level. Women’s representation in parliament is 5.8 percent and it is 25 percent in local government institutions. He said that the aim is to bring up the women’s representation in parliament and provincial councils to the same level. He further said that the charter which was signed today will be made a parliamentary draft bill within three months.
Expressing her views on the occasion, mayor of Colombo Rosy Senanayake said that the women’s charter was prepared by taking into account the views of women at grass route level. She said that protection of women in the country will be ensured through a presidential commission in future. She further said that the charter was introduced today to provide rights equally to everyone to live as happy families by eliminating violence.
Taking part on the occasion Minister Thalatha Athukorala said that a society where everyone can live fairly has been created by ending the era where women became helpless due to conflicts.
Minister Chandrani Bandara said that a charter has enhanced the dignity of women.
