The constitutional coup marks its first anniversary. The Prime Minister says defeating the coup is the victory of democracy

Prime Minister Ranil Wickremasinghe says that today is very important for all who respect democracy and the rule of law. Today marks the first anniversary of the so-called constitutional conspiracy that ousted the democratically elected government in Sri Lanka. However, the peace-loving people had managed to establish democracy again after 52 days of the coup. This is victory gained by not only the government but also by the entire Sri Lankan nation. The government has been able to properly establish democracy, freedom and independent commissions in the country through the 19th amendment to the constitution. The judiciary, police and public service can be considered independent at present. The judiciary now has the power to roll out its judgments without any influence. The parliament has the power to appoint the Prime Minister. Therefore the Prime Minister is answerable to the parliament.
