Issuing a release, the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Sri Lanka states, they wish to draw the attention of the citizenry, on discerning wisely and courageously, on the choice of the Presidential Candidate, who should be a person of integrity – to work in close collaboration with all – to safeguard the freedom and the rights of the people, and to uphold democratic principles, in order to work for the sustainable development of the country.
Given the brutal attacks unleashed on the innocent faithful on Easter Sunday, the leaders of the country are urged to commit themselves to ensure that religious extremism and racism is rooted out, and peace co-existence amongst all ethnic and religious groups is vigorously pursued.
The Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Sri Lanka also notes, ‘corruption’ has been the root cause for the set-back in the development of the country: therefore, it is incumbent upon the future President to take drastic measures to eradicate corruptions at all levels.
The Church teaches all citizens to be mindful of the right and also the responsibility to exercise their franchise freely, for the common good. Accordingly, the Catholic Bishop Conference of Sri Lanka exhorts all Catholics and the citizens of other faiths, to exercise their sacrosanct democratic right, and cast their vote at the upcoming Presidential Election.
