Professor Winni Vitharana passed away this morning at his residence in Mount Lavonia after brief illness. He was 91. Professor Winnie Vitharana has served the country for about seven decade as a University teacher, writer and a lecturer. He was born on 2nd of June 1928 in the Pallikkudawa village in Tangalle. He had his higher education at Mahinda Vidyalaya in Galle and entered the Colombo University. Professor Winni Vitharana was an academic of the Sri Jayawardhanapura University and vice president of the “Hela Hawla”. He served as the dean of the Sinhala faculty of the Ruhuna University. He held the posts of chief editor of the Sinhala dictionary and Chairman of the Sri Lanka Arts Council. He was fluent in Sinhala, English, Sanskrit and Pali languages. The body of the late Professor Winni Vitharana lie at his residence No 67, Beach Road, Mount Lavonia from tomorrow. Funeral arrangements will be notified later.
