Reservoirs in catchment areas reach spill level

Heavy rains in catchment areas has resulted in an increase in the water levels of a number of major reservoirs. According to Ministry of Power and Renewable Energy spokesperson Sulakshana Jayawardena, a number of reservoirs have reached spill level and as a result, the spill gates of a number of reservoirs have been opened. He adds that due to the rise in water levels, hydroelectricity production has increased to 55 percent. The water levels of Castlereigh reservoir has reached 91 percent and Kothmale reservoir 89 percent.

Meanwhile, Director of the Irrigation Department Janaki Meegasthenna says the water levels of 75 major tanks have reached approximately 62 percent. Many spill gates have been opened in tanks in Anuradhapura, Puttalam, Hambantota, Kurunegala and Batticaloa districts. She further stated, as a result of increased water levels the forthcoming Yala season can be cultivated successfully.
