Parliamentarian Ajith P. Perera says, a letter – bearing the signatures of the UNP Working Committee members – will be handed over to the current Leader of the United National Party: Former Prime Minister Ranil Wickremasinghe, and Speaker of Parliament Karu Jayasooriya, calling for the party leadership to be handed over to Sajith Premadasa.
The Working Committee has reached an agreement, on putting forward MP Sajith Premadasa, as the Prime Ministerial candidate to represent the Opposition at the Parliament Election.
The MP notes, since almost all the prominent leaders of the party have signed this letter, it is clear that their stance is also that the party needs a new leadership.
MP Perera rejected statements voiced by certain individuals that the party leadership would be given to Sajith Premadasa, ‘after’ the Parliament Election.
Meanwhile, Parliamentarian Sunil Handun-neththi says, the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna will contest the next General Election, as the ‘National Peoples’ Power’, under the ‘compass’ symbol.
Speaking to the SLBC, the MP said, contestants will be fielded across all districts, and a 50-day programme will be implemented to identify prospective vote bases.
