Prime Minister Ranil Wickremasinghe says that the opportunity will be given to parents to go to courts against the Education Ministry to get trained teachers for the schools if such teachers are not given to schools under any government. The Prime Minister said this during a ceremony to open three new buildings and laying the foundation for a new building at Ginthota Zahira College in Galle yesterday.
He said that during the past the Ministry of Education has acted to provide teachers for political needs but not for the needs of students and schools. The Prime Minister said that during his tenure as the Education Minister teachers were recruited through a competitive examination and colleges of education was set up to train the teachers.
He added that the national education institute was established during that time. He pointed out that there are many untrained teachers in schools at present as some people acted to get political gains.
He said that the training should be provided respective of whether a graduate or not. Steps will be taken to modernize training institutions and methodically implement training programmes. The Prime Minister said that new regulations will be introduced for educational standards. He said that only trained teachers will be recruited to schools in another five years’ time.
