Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation Sergey Lavrov is scheduled arrive in the island today. It is the first visit of the Russian Foreign Minister since the presidential election in November and the formation of the new government. It is the first time Minister Lavrov visited Sri Lanka since 2009. He is slated to meet with President Gotabhaya Rajapaksa, Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa and his counterpart Foreign Affairs Minister Dinesh Gunawardena. The two Foreign Ministers will hold a series of bilateral talks on economic, defence, educational, tourism and science and technology. In addition, the Russian Foreign Minister is scheduled to meet with other high ranking officials, politicians, civil society representatives and other parties upon his visit.
