The government has started the paddy purchasing exercise parallel with the harvesting of the Maha paddy crop and this has saved farmers from the clutches of private traders who tried to exploit them, Development Banks and Loan Schemes State Minister Shehan Semasinghe said.
The government has also started the purchase of paddy with moisture for the first time and this has caused much relief to the farmers, he added. The State Minister was speaking when he visited the Talawa paddy warehouse complex to inspect the progress of the government paddy purchasing exercise on Wednesday.
Semasinghe said farmers had already started supplying their harvest to government warehouses and as such, these warehouses are expected to receive a sizeable share of the Maha harvest by the end this month. The State Minister emphasised that the government objective was to create an agriculture-based economy and said farmers should not harbour any suspicion about the government paddy purchasing exercise. He also said that mobile vehicles would be deployed to purchase paddy from distant areas.
