People in Kalutara area, point out the need to implement a sustainable programme to desalinate water of Kalu Ganga. They say that this problem arises during dry season as the water level of the river drastically recedes. According to the Water Supply and Drainage Board six divisional secretariat areas in the Kalutara district face shortage of drinking water due to this problem. Additional General Manager of the Board to the Western Province Kristy Fernando says that 29 bowsers have been deployed to provide water to the vulnerable households. It has been proposed to construct a permanent barrier at the Kalu Ganga estuary to prevent sea water contaminating into the river.
