The President and Prime Minister and parliamentarians pay last respects to the late Minister Arumugam Thondaman at the Parliament premises

The remains of Minister of Community Empowerment and Estate Infrastructure Development Arumugam Thondaman, brought to the parliament today. President Gotabaya Rajapaksa, Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa, Former Speaker Karu Jayasuriya and many Ministers and MPs were present at the occasion.

The President paid his last respects to the late Minister first, then the Prime Minister and the other MPs were paid their last respect. The parliament staff were also attended the occasion.

The 54-year old politician died yesterday due to what was described as a fall at his home. Late Minister Thondaman’s funeral with full state honours will be held at Nuwara Eliya on Sunday. He has been the MP for the district of Nuwara Eliya for 26 years.

He was the grandson of prominent unionist, former leader of CWC Saumyamoorthi Thondaman and came into politics in 1985 as private secretary to his grandfather. Following the demise of the elder Thondaman, he was elected as the Leader of CWC in 1999.
