President Gotabaya Rajapaksa has examined the national education policy which is being prepared. The Presidential Task Force on Education met at the Presidential Secretariat yesterday and briefed the President on the present situation of preparing the national education policy. The education policy is being prepared under the theme “equal educational opportunities for each child” which is mentioned in the President’s election manifesto. Expressing his views on the occasion the President emphasised the importance of formulating a policy that can be agreed upon by everyone since the decisions affect the country and future generations. Recommendations have been made covering pre-school, primary, secondary, higher education and professional education levels. The President informed them to subject the policy for at least for two months of social dialogue before the final reports of the education policy are approved. The task force pointed out although schools and universities were closed for COVID eradication, the online education system has reached a high progress. The president emphasised the need to further enhance the online education system. President instructed to prepare plans to cover subjects such as English, Mathematics and Science where there are teacher shortages, through the online system. Chairman of the University Grants Commission Professor Sampath Amarathunga said that all universities in the country have achieved a high progress through their online education systems.
