Minister Wijedasa Rajapakshe says the existing constitution does not permit former presidents Chandrika Kumaratunga and Mahinda Rajapaksa to contest the next presidential election. Speaking to the media today, the minister said provisions under the 19th amendment prevented both from running for a third term.
He also said only the President has the powers to decide if a referendum should be held to seek the public opinion on this matter. Minister Rajapkshe added that any reference to the Supreme Court would get rejected. He said that the candidates at a presidential election should submit a sworn affidavit declaring their suitability to contest
