The late Kalasuri Sybil Wettasinghe bids farewell to the nation today. The funeral will be held this afternoon at a general cemetery in Borella. Her remains are lying at Jayarathne funeral parlour until 3.00 pm today.
Issuing a condolence message President Gotabaya Rajapaksa says that he was deeply saddened to hear the demise of the world – renowned children’s author and illustrator Sybil Wettasinghe, most dearly addressed as “Sybil Nanda” by hundreds of thousands of children. The veteran author Sybil Wettasinghe was honoured by the domestic and foreign intellectuals as a modern writer who was able to understand the mind of a child. She colorfully utilized the experiences she gained through traditional Sinhalese culture to comprehend the world of the children and to provide guidance for them. The simple folk style language and the magnificent illustration patterns are the unique features of her artistic style. The astounding talent she possessed to understand the minds of the children has been recognized internationally.
Issuing a condolence message Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa has pointed out that the late Mrs. Sybil Wettasinghe has been recognised not only Sri Lanka but internationally as an artist and a child writer. The Prime Minister has said the memories in her childhood have laid the foundation for that. The Prime Minister in his message has said that Mrs. Sybil Wettasinghe has passed away after rendering a yeoman service to children’s literature and a gab that cannot be filled.
