Sri Lanka’s Communist Party celebrates its 77th anniversary today. The party was established on 3rd June 1943 under the leadership of Dr. S.A. Wickremasinghe and with the Chairmanship of Venerable Udakendawala Saranankara Thero. The British rule did not provide any solution when nearly 600 locals died due to Malaria epidemic. Dr. N.M. Perera, Dr. S.A. Wickramasinghe and others came forward to provide relief for the malaria affected people by launching Sooriya Flower Movement against the British directed Poppy Flower Movement. As a result, Sri Lanka’s Communist party was established. Deputy General Secretary of Sri Lanka’s Communist Party S. Sudasinghe said that the division of the Global Leftist Movement during the 2nd World War also contributed to establish the party. The anniversary ceremony which will be held this afternoon at the Communist Party headquarters in Borella will take place under the patronage of party Chairman and the Governor of the Uva Province Raja Collure. The keynote address will be delivered by the General Secretary of the Party D.E.W. Gunasekara.
