Prime Minister inaugurates the coastal resources protection week

The inauguration ceremony of the week to protect coastal resources announced by Sri Lanka to coincide with the international coastal cleaning day 2020 took place today at Mt-Lavinia beach under the patronage of Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapakse. Ministers Mahinda Amaraweera, Douglas Devananda, State Ministers Nalaka Godahewa, Sarath Weerasekara, Armed forces commanders and a group of people were present at the ceremony. The Saturday of the third week of September each year has been declared as the international coastal cleaning day. The coastal resources protection day announced by Sri Lanka to coincide with this day, is effective from today to the 25th of this month. The cleaning programme will be implemented in the Wayamba, East and southern provinces Kaluthara and Chilaw beach parks, Punkuduthiew island, Uppuweli, Thangalle-Paraviwella and Dadella during the week. Another 70 cleaning programme will take place on selected beaches. Taking part in today’s inauguration ceremony chairperson of Marine Environment protection authority Darshani Lahandapura said that about 200 kilometers of Sri Lanka’s coastal belt has been severely polluted.  She pointed out that everyone should take the responsibility to protect the ocean and the coast.  Awards and the certificate were presented on the occasion to the winners of the competitions held in connection with the world ocean day which fell on the 8th of June.
