The United National Party will celebrate its 72nd anniversary today. The UNP was launched as the first step of contesting the first general election under the Salbury constitution. The first meeting of the party was held on 6th September 1946 at Palmfort House in Gilfred Crescent, Colombo. Mr. S.W.R.D Bandaranaike proposed the name of right honourable D.S. Senanayake to the chairmanship of the party.
Mr. Bandaranaike and Sir Francis Molamurai were entrusted with preparing the party constitution. Mr. S. Nadesan proposed the name of the party as United National Party. Sir John Kothalawala, Mr. S.W.R.D. Bandaranaike, Mr. Geroge E.De Silva, Mr. T.B. Jaya and Mr. A. Mahadeva became deputy chairman of the party. The first general secretary of the party is H.W. Amarasooriya. A.I.R.A. Rasi and J.R. Jayawardena were appointed as co-treasurers. The 72nd anniversary celebration of the UNP will be held this morning at the party headquarters, Sirikotha, under the patronage of Prime Minister Ranil Wickremasinghe. Sinhala national service of SLBC will bring a live broadcast of the anniversary function from 10.00 am today.
