A tense situation has arisen among inmates at the Mahara Prison, says Police Media Spokesperson DIG Ajith Rohana.
A team of Special Task Force (STF) officers has been deployed to control the situation.
The Commissioner-General of Prisons Thushara Upuldeniya stated that four inmates were killed while attempting to control the tensed situation.
Another 24 inmates have sustained injuries. They have been admitted to the hospital for treatment, DIG Ajith Rohana said.
The DIG added, “Five police teams led by the Kelaniya Senior Superintendant of Police (SSP) and the Ragama Superintendant of Police (SP) have been dispatched to assist the prison authorities to control the situation.
Several more teams led by an Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) have been dispatched.
They are being directed to ensure security outside the prison.
