Armed supporters of President Trump stormed the Capitol building and forced a lockdown. Rioters smashed windows and clashed with police, with one person shot dead. The violence halted debate over Joe Biden’s election win but Congress will reconvene tonight. Some Republicans were trying to overturn the results in some states but lack sufficient support. Trump called on his violent supporters to go home but repeated false claims the election was stolen. Earlier, Democrats won two Senate seats in Georgia that tipped control of the Senate their way.
Meanwhile, the Democrats have won control of the Senate after Raphael Warnock and Jon Ossoff defeated Republican incumbents. US President-elect Joe Biden has blasted the “insurrection” of pro-Trump rioters who stormed the US Capitol and he demanded an end to their “siege”.
The Democrat called on outgoing President Donald Trump to “step up” and repudiate the violence. In a tweeted video, Mr Trump repeated debunked claims the vote was “stolen”, but urged protesters to “go home”. A joint session of Congress confirming electoral college votes has been suspended and forced into recess. The protesters fought their way past police to breach the US Capitol, shouting and waving pro-Trump and US flags as they roamed through the halls, demanding the results of the presidential election be overturned.
