Sri Lanka reports first case of the new variant of COVID-19

The Chief Epidemiologist Dr. Sudath Samaraweera said an arrival from the United Kingdom has been infected with the new variant of the coronavirus that is rapidly spreading in the UK and several other countries. He added the individual was confirmed to have contracted the new variant of COVID-19 by an investigative team of the Sri Jayewardenepura University.
Meanwhile 588 COVID-19 cases were detected yesterday increasing the number of infections to 49,539.
576 among the group were identified as contacts of the Minuwangoda-Peliyagoda COVID-19 cluster, eight from within prisons and four overseas
returnees from Pakistan, Qatar, the Maldives and Poland. Coronavirus recoveries are presently at 42,620 with 530 individuals discharged during the past 24-hours. 6,675 individuals are being treated for the coronavirus at present at 64 treatment facilities. Sri Lanka confirmed 04 more coronavirus-related deaths by the Director-General of Health Services bringing the total number of coronavirus fatalities in Sri Lanka to 244.
