Minister Dullas Alahapperuma says that the first project to produce electricity through biomass using garbage will commence from Matara. He said that plans have been made to add 400 kilowatts of power to the national grid using 50 tons of garbage daily. The Minister said that plans had been made to launch the project five years ago. However he said that they expect to activate the project by October and add power to the national grid. He mentioned this after making and observation tour of the project proposed to be built at Kotavila area in the Matara District. He added that steps would be taken to implement the project island wide.
