The opposition accuses government of attempting to divert attention.

MP Chaminda Wijesiri has pointed out that although Minister Sarath Weerasekara said that Nawufer Maulawi has been identified as the master mind behind the Easter Sunday attack, he has not been summoned by the Easter Sunday commission. He mentioned this during a media briefing today at the opposition leader’s office. He said that the government is facing a crisis with the passing of 20th amendment to the constitution. MP Hesha Withanage said that Minister Mahindananda Aluthgamage is leveling charges against opposition leader Sajith Premadasa using parliamentary privileges. He said that he had no issues about mentioning the name of MP Sumandiran, but accusing Mr. Sajith Premadasa to divert problems of the people towards another way, cannot be approved.

Taking part in a media briefing today Minister Sarath Weerasekara disclosed that the youth are becoming victims of drugs. The government has launched many programmes to eradicate drug menace. Among them are minimizing demand for drugs and rehabilitation of drug addicts without sending them to jails. 31,000 have been imprisoned last year and 11,000 out of them are drug addicts. The minister said that he proposed to establish 197 police stations. He said that there is a shortage of 11,600 police officers. More than 2000 police officers are undergoing training at present. State Minister D.V Janaka while taking part in the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna media briefing accused the opposition of creating problems in the country.

He said that national security was a dream for public during the recent past. People were frightened that some parts of the country would be handed over the other countries. He said that the present government has ensured national security and cancelled the MCC agreement. The people have the opportunity to pay more attention on environmental protection and food security. The state minister pointed out people were not mentally free to think about such matters during the time of the previous government.
