The Muslim holy month of Ramadan will begin today amid restrictions on communal prayers and fasting due to the coronavirus pandemic. The Colombo Grand Mosque said Muslims in Sri Lanka will begin Ramadan fasting at dawn today as the moon was not sighted over the island on the 12th night. The Director General of Health Services has issued a series of guidelines in this regard. Accordingly, it states that only persons over 18 can go to mosques to attend prayers. Also, the Ministry of Health stated that a distance of one meter should be recorded in mosques, and that only about 100 devotees can attend one prayer time.
Muslims across the world will be observing fasting during which they abstain from eating, drinking and smoking from dawn until sunset.
