Prime Minister Ranil Wickremasinghe says it is the media itself that can harm the hard won media freedom. Addressing a meeting held in Colombo yesterday, the Prime Minister said that people had to engage in a serious struggle to win the existing media freedom. The Premier said that the present government has taken many steps to strengthen media freedom and the democracy.
The passing of the Right to Information Act has led to further strengthen the democracy. In addition, the 19th amendment to the constitution has made provisions to establish independent commissions. The media institutions should criticise the shortcomings of the government but also highlight the good actions taken by it. The Prime Minister added that Sri Lankan media do not adequately highlight the investments made by the government on housing and road development, education and health sectors.
