The government has emphasized that there is no salt scarcity in the country. Minister Udaya Gammanpila said that there is no truth in the reports that the salt industry is facing a crisis with the burning of Express Pearl ship. He mentioned this during the cabinet press briefing this morning.

Trade Minister Bandula Gunawardhana said that there are sufficient stocks of salt at present even for another one year. He disclosed this during a discussion with state and private sector salt producers at the Trade Ministry this morning. The trade ministry has said that certain groups are trying to increase price of salt by creating a salt shortage. The ministry said that the government will not allow the public to be inconvenienced through such activities.

Meanwhile the consumer affairs authority conducted operations in several areas including Pettah on information that salt stocks have been hidden. The authority says that strict legal action taken against traders who hide salt.
