Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapakse has emphasized that pre-schools with minimum facilities will be identified and they would be developed. The vistas of prosperity policy statement has said that the machinery to maintain pre-schools according to international standards will be introduced to the country. The Prime Minister said that the government aims to establish a model pre-school at each Grama Sewa division in the country. The Prime Minister mentioned this at the ‘Guru Abhimani’ national ceremony to provide a monthly allowance of 2500 rupees to the pre-school teachers. More than 25,000 pre-school teachers have qualified for the allowance. Plans have been made to provide a permanent monthly salary to preschool teachers following a proper training. Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapakse said that pre-school teachers will be given the opportunity to study up to a university degree. He said that the preschool should not be made another school to provide competitive education. Minister of education G.L Peris and State Minister Piyal Nishantha handed over the national policy on pre childhood education. Venerable Professor Medagoda Abayathissa Thero who led the efforts to introduce the policy was present on the occasion.
