The Annual Conference of the Institution of Engineers Sri Lanka was held in Colombo this morning with the participation of President Maithripala Sirisena. It was organized jointly with the Federation of Engineering Institutions of South and Central Asia, under the theme; ‘Plans to reach, and Challenges to surmount, in the Path of Achieving Sustainable Development Goals’.
Speaking at the event, the President said, the challenges faced, range from weather-related-changes to ‘poverty’ that stands in the way of building a wholesome nation, not forgetting fraud corruption and theft which have become formidable challenges.

The President added, he has given instructions for a committee comprising senior engineers in the irrigation sector to be appointed, to formulate a project to divert waters of the water bodies that flow through the Rathnapura and Kalutara areas causing floods.
