The number of candidates who will be elected from each electoral district at the general election has announced through a gazette notification. The highest number of candidates will be elected from the Colombo District which is 19. The lowest number which is 4 will be elected from the Trincomalee District. 18 members will be elected from the Gampaha district, 15 from the Kurunegala District, 12 from the Kandy District and 11 members will be elected from the Ratnapura District. 10 candidates will be elected from the Kalutara District. Anuradhapura and Kegalle Districts will elect 9 members each. 8 candidates each will be elected from Nuwara Eliya, Puttalam and Badulla Districts. Matara, Hambantota, Digamadulla and Jaffna electoral districts will get 7 members each. 6 candidates each are expected to be elected from Wanni and Moneragala Electoral Districts. Matale and Polonnaruwa Districts will elect 5 members each.

The political parties and independent groups contesting at the forthcoming general election should include additional 3 members in their list of candidates from the districts. The recognized political parties are not needed to place deposits for the forthcoming election. The independent groups should place a deposit of 2000 rupees. The general election will be held on the 5th of January. Accepting of nominations will be held between the 19th and 26th this month.
