The Finance Ministry says that the Finance Minister did not have any influence on the customs

The Ministry of finance and Economic Affairs says that the finance minister had not been ordered to release the arrested 53,455 US dollars in Katunayake airport. The ministry rejects the media reports spreading over this incident.

The Iranian national was arrested at the Katunayake airport recently with 53,455 US dollars. He was taking back his salaries to Iran what he earned by working at the Uma Oya project which is under Iran aids. Sri Lanka and Iran do not conduct financial transactions. So he was physically taking back his salaries to his home country.

After the arrest the Iranian ambassador has requested to Finance minister to release this sum on a compassionate grounds. By considering the diplomats request the finance minister has ordered the customs to release this sum. The finance ministry this is not the first time that Iranian nationals taking money physically to their country like this way. This kind of an incident was took place in the month of June as well.
