The Speaker meets with the President, to discuss the present political impasse

Taking into consideration the views expressed by many party leaders at today’s Parliamentary Session suggesting that the Speaker hold a discussion with the President on the present political impasse, Speaker Karu Jayasooriya met with President Maithripala Sirisena at the Presidential Secretariat, this evening.

The Speaker pointed out; an unstable situation is propping up in all sectors across the country, while the rupee is depreciating further, and the country will not be able to further bear the collapse in the Investment and Tourism sectors. The Speaker stressed on arriving at a speedy solution to the present situation.

A release issued by the Office of the Speaker stated, a favourable response was given by the President, to the concerns raised by the Speaker. The release further stated, the President appreciated the task undertaken by the Speaker, in search of a solution to the present circumstances.

At the discussion, the President agreed to have separate discussions tomorrow, with the Opposition Leader and the leaders of the parties representing the United National Front, in order to take the necessary steps in arriving at a speedy solution.
