A diesel power set and a diesel electric locomotive have arrived at the Colombo port this morning. They were brought under an Indian credit line. Parliamentarians Nimal Siripala De Silva, Mahinda Samarasinghe, Secretary to the Ministry of Transport Sena Withanage and Railway General Manager Dilantha Fernando were present on this occasion.
The value of diesel electric locomotive is 77.8 million rupees and value of the twin power set is 1800 million rupees. The power set is comprised with 9 compartments. The Railway Department expects to operate this power set on long distance journeys to carry more passengers. The diesel electric locomotive will be used on the main routes. Another 09 twin power sets and 5 diesel electric locomotives will be imported next year under the Indian credit line. The Ministry of Transport and Aviation says that 18 billion rupees will be spent in this regard.
