Parliamentarian Lakshman Yapa Abeywardena says Mr. Mahinda Rajapaksa decided to resign from the post of Prime Minister in order to leave room for the relevant party to establish a new government. The parliamentarian also said Mr. Rajapaksa has taken this decision for the sake of the country.

With this decision, the President will have the opportunity of appointing a new Prime Minister and the Cabinet. The UPFA has decided to sit on the opposition in the Parliament. Meanwhile, Parliamentarian Wasudeva Nanayakkara expressed his views about the decision given by the Supreme Court today.
