Laggala New town will be vested with the public by the President Maithripala Sirisena on the 8th of January. The fully fledged town has been constructed with all facilities instead of the old Laggala town. Earlier, the town was inundated due to the Moragahakanda-Kalu Ganga irrigational project. 4,500 million rupees has been invested for the construction work. The overall land of the town is 75 hectares. It includes Police station, unit management office, cooperative building complex, Pradeshiya Sabha building, divisional secretariat office, three central colleges, two junior schools, new hospital complex, health service centre, playground and with all other facilities including banks and 26 state institutions.
Measures have been taken to provide maximum compensation for the people who lost their lands due to the Kalu Ganga project. More than one billion rupees has been given for the compensation. In addition to the compensation for their properties, half acre of land has been given for each family when they resettle in their places. The residents of the area said that the new town has more facilities than the old one.
