The Employers Federation is of the view that a collective agreement over salary increase for estate workers could be reached soon with the estate workers’ trade unions . Director General of the federation Kanishka Weerasinghe said that they expect an agreement within next two weeks.
There may be an increase of the basic salary over presently proposed 600 rupees per day which will pave the way for estate workers to earn more than a 1,000 rupee daily wage. General Secretary of the Trade Union Collective S. Ramanathan told the SLBC that they hope to find a solution to this problem without further delay. He said that they are ready to agree to an amount close to 1,000 rupees as daily wage without sticking to the original demand of 1,000 rupees per day.
