Whale Watching in the Mirissa sea area around Matara is to be streamlined. Thereby, measures will be put in place for whale watching to continue in a manner in which a threat is not posed to the creatures.

Minister Sagala Rathnayake had discussions this morning with boat service providers, to discuss shortcomings in the boat service, and how to rectify them.

Edwin Silva, who is the President of the Whale Watching and Water Association says, although around 2,000 tourists visit the Mirissa area daily, since a proper framework to streamline Whale Watching is not in place, the government loses around 4.5 million rupees in revenue.
