Media Minister Mangala Samaraweera condemns the act of intimidation to a local journalist who has provided the necessary information to the New York Times Newspaper. In a media release the Minister further said an investigation is being carried out on this allegation.

The government will take action to punish the wrongdoers upon completion of the investigation. The Minister also condemned the irresponsible act of joint opposition and Podujana Peramuna for exerting pressure on the particular journalist in various forms.

No one should disturb the media journalist while carrying out their duties. The Podujana Peramuna leadership should take the full responsibility for intimidating the local journalists concern. The Minister assured that such things will not happen in future.

The present government has provided the highest level of media freedom. The country cannot afford to go back to an era where media journalists were threatened by political elements.
