President Maithripala Sirisena says that it is bad for democracy that six provincial councils have now become dysfunctional. According to him, this goes against the expectations of the 13th amendment to the constitution. Responding to calls for a presidential election, he says there should be preparations for provincial council polls first. The President says he has already discussed the matter with the Election’s Commissioner.

He was speaking at a meeting at the Presidential Secretariat with SLFP organizers in the Uva and Central provinces. President Sirisena said the people should be ensured their voting rights by holding the provincial councils election soon.

Speaking further, he rejected accusations against the Presidential Secretariat over a delay in the appointment of heads and director boards to state corporations and statutory boards. The President said the relevant ministries were responsible for those appointments. He added that the Prime Minister’s Office has not yet submitted the recommendations in this regard to the Presidential Secretariat.
