Prime Minister Ranil Wickremasinghe says, certain politicians have begun promulgating falsehood with regard to the new constitution that is being drafted, and are attempting to spread racism in the country.
The Premier was speaking at the National Thaipongal Festival, held at Temple Trees, yesterday.
The Premier emphasizes, what has been put forward so far with regard to the new constitution is not a bill, but a report that includes the views of experts and a number of parties.
Thereby, all views are being given consideration.
The Premier further stated
Now is a moment at which all ethnicities in the country have come together. At this crucial juncture, there are reports of certain sentiments being spread across society that the country is to be divided. It is our duty to forward such reports as well to the Constitutional Assembly. For the draft Bill of the new constitution that is being compiled to be passed in the House, a two thirds majority is necessary. Therefore, given the present political climate, the support of the Parliament as a Constitutional Assembly is necessary.
Meanwhile, when the Constitutional Council convened at the Parliamentary Complex recently, the Premier emphasized, the government has absolutely no intention of dividing the country or divesting Buddhism of its pride of place.
The Premier further emphasized, the devolution of power will take place under the Provincial Councils System, within a unitary state.
