Making a special statement in parliament today, Prime Minister Ranil Wickremasinghe said that the Hambantota port has incurred a loss of 47 billion rupees upto now. Operations are being conducted by public and private company. As it was a harbour without ships, the aim was to provide a solution through discussions with China.
He said that the Chinese government did not apply any pressure in connection with the Port. Operations are being conducted by China-Merchant company with the government. Steps have been taken to develop industries and infrastructure in Hambantota area according to the agreement.
Although discussions were held with China about Mattala airport, there was no positive response. Therefore, discussions were held with India. The Prime Minister said that the government deals with China and India as a sovereign state. The report of the New York Times on Hambantota port is consisted of two parts. He said that he replied to one of the parts of the report.
