Prime Minister Ranil Wickremasinghe says he will support for any programme forwarded to safeguard the unitary state. He said this while opening the newly constructed Sanghawaasaya and Dhamma school building at the Sri Pushpaarama Viharaya in Karangoda Yakkalamulla in Galle. The Prime Minister also stated that the statement made by the Malwathu Maha Nayaka Thera regarding the proposed constitution should be studied deeply.
He said the views of the Thera are more important at a time when some groups are making baseless allegations about the constitution. He also reiterated that no new constitution or draft has been prepared. An operational committee was appointed representing all parties and also a constitutional council appointed by convening the Parliament in this regard. The Prime Minister holds the chairmanship of this committee.
An interim report has been prepared after discussing the all proposals presented for it. The report has been presented to the Parliament after debating it. The two third majority in Parliament is needed to bring the constitutional draft. He also stated that only if such support is received a new constitution would be prepared. He further emphasized that he also supports of the unitary state which was the ideology of late D S Senanayaka , J R Jayawardena, Ranasinghe Premadasa and D B Wijethunga.
