Participating in the Matara District Conference of the ‘Mathin Nidahas Ratak’ National Drug Prevention Programme last morning at Matara Sanath Jayasooriya grounds, the President said, drug traffickers appear in various disguises, therefore, it is not easy to identify and track them. The President further stated a number of special programmes will be launched within the next few months, further strengthening the programmes launched so far to curb drug abuse.

In addition, the President also stated, in the present context, various forces are instrumental acting against the philosophy of Therawada Buddhism. He points out, some are attempting to portray a distorted version of the Buddhist Philosophy. He emphasized, as much as plots to destroy cultural heritages are “organized conspiracies”, the drug menace is also a plot to destroy the country.

The President said, he will fulfil his responsibility, in bringing this situation under control, by taking stern decisions.

Addressing the gathering the president alleged that information revealed that copies of certain valuable documents of National Archives Department have been given to foreign countries without any approval. The president also emphasized the importance of preserving the valuable archives of the country for the future generation. President Sirisena made these remarks at the 13th district progress review meeting held at Matara in parallel to ‘Mathin Nidahas Ratak’ National Drug Prevention Programme
