Minister of Agriculture, Rural Economic Affairs and Animal Husbandry Development: P. Harrison says, construction work of the Malwathu Oya Reservoir will commence before the Sinhala and Tamil New Year.
He disclosed this move, speaking at the ceremony to vest the Project Office of the Malwathu Oya Reservoir with the public, recently.
The cost estimated is 155 million dollars.
The Minister further stated, by curtailing unnecessary expenses, it was possible to bring down the estimation, thereby, saving a sum of 14 million dollars.
Farmer families in the Anuradhapura, Mannar and Vavuniya Districts will benefit by this project. The Minister also stated, new houses will be constructed in the Thanthirimale, Kalu-wila and Naaran-wila areas, for those whose houses go under water during the rains.
He added, a quick-access-road to reach Mannar and the Shrine of Our Lady of Madu will be constructed.
The Minister also noted, since the districts which will benefit from the Malwathu Oya Reservoir Project are home to the Sinhala, Tamil and Muslim communities, the project will enhance reconciliation.
Therefore, the “Malwathu Oya” itself can be described as a “bridge of reconciliation”.
