Construction work of Sri Lanka’s largest Export Processing Zone will commence at Bingiriya, under the patronage of Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe, tomorrow.
This is the first mammoth Export Processing Zone to be constructed, after 15 years.
This Export processing Zone will be established under three stages.
Under the first stage, a 164-acre area known as “German Watte” will be developed and 25 factories will be established, generating 10,000 direct employment opportunities and 3,000 opportunities for indirect employment.
Under the second stage, a land space of 282-acres in the Goraka-gas-aara area will be utilized to establish factories, through which 35,000 direct and indirect employment opportunities are projected.
When the project reaches the third stage, the Export Processing Zone will be spread across 1,200 acres of land. The entire development process of the Bingiriya Export Processing Zone is expected to reach completion between 8 to 12 years
