The “Hambanthota Udava” Investment Project – which is the largest in the investment history of Sri Lanka – took effect today with the laying of the foundation stone for the Mirijjawila Petroleum Refinery and the Cement Factory, under the patronage of Prime Minister Ranil Wickremasinghe this morning.
Speaking at the event, the Primer said, the transformational pivotal point of th
e Ruhunu economy is Hambanthota. The Hambanthota Investment Promotion Zone is a blessing to the country. The Premier noted, the Hambanthota Port is currently functioning, while steps have been taken to run the Maththala Airport. Investments amounting to over 4 billion dollars will flow into Sri Lanka, through “Hambanthota Udava”.
Joining in the event, Minister of Finance: Mangala Samaraweera said, an environment has been created in which foreign direct investments flow into the county. He emphasized, the government’s objective is, instead of obtaining loans, to bring in investments. He pointed out, projects that do not benefit the common masses are of no use to the country. A number of such projects launched by the previous administration have not yielded benefits.
They have only been a weight to the economy. Now the present government has to settle the debts. The present administration is of the objective to empower the citizenry and bring about economic development. The Minister pledged to make Sri Lanka the most favourable investment ground in South Asia.
Also joining in the event, Minister Sajith Premadasa said, through the proposed Cement Factory, 500 direct employment opportunities and 1,500 indirect employment opportunities will be generated. The Petroleum Refinery will generate 1,500 direct employment opportunities, while 3,000 indirect employment opportunities will be generated.
On the side lines, the Minister also noted, Prime Minister Ranil Wickremasinghe in view of his Birthday which falls today has granted 350,000 rupees from his personal funds, for this year’s Yovun Puraya.
