President Maithripala Sirisena invites the country’s intelligentsia, including the academics, to come forward and serve the country and the people more through their experience and research findings. He says he is extending the invitation as the chief public servant in the country.
The President stresses the essential contributions that the intellectuals could make to overcome socio-economic, environmental and other challenges. He was speaking at a biannual awards presentation that recognizes research excellence by university academics. This year the event took place at Presidents’ House, where awards were presented under six categories.
Speaking further, the President said that free education has ensured that the country was having enough intellectuals. He remarked that at least 50 of the 225 members of parliament should come from among the intellectuals if the country was to be built.
